Kaya FM broadcasts on 95.9 MHz from Johannesburg and now brands itself on air as Kaya 959, the home of the Afropolitan. It launched in August 1997 as one of the first private commercial radio licences granted in South Africa, and it still runs a deliberate split of roughly sixty per cent music to forty per cent talk. The music is grown-up and rooted in Black South African listening: soul, rhythm-and-blues, jazz, kwaito, old school jams and current chart songs, with Sunday mornings handed to Soulful Sunday presented by Nonn Botha. Programmes go out in English and the signal covers Gauteng, from Pretoria in the north down to Vanderbijlpark and out across the East Rand.
