Khazanchi ("the cashier") is a 1941 drama made at Dalsukh Pancholi's studio in Lahore. M. Ismail plays the title character, a respectable cashier whose settled family life is thrown into turmoil, with S. D. Narang and Ramola Devi in the romantic leads. It was a huge box-office success across India, and its real legacy is its music. Ghulam Haider brought lively Punjabi folk rhythms and the dholak into the mainstream Hindi film song, and the soundtrack, with Shamshad Begum's voice prominent in songs such as "Sawan ke nazare hain", was so popular that it changed the direction of film music for the rest of the decade. Film historians regard it as a landmark of the pre-Partition Lahore industry.
