Description

Nikhat is a young actress on her way to stardom in the Hindi film industry of the 1950s, already caught up with an older, powerful star. Zafar is a talented, prickly writer who arrives from Lucknow and is hired to write for the movies. Their love affair plays out against the glamour, compromises and casual cruelty of a business that uses people up, and both have to decide what they are willing to give for success. Sudhir Mishra recreates the period with care, from the studios and parties to the costumes, and the film is often read as a tribute to, and critique of, the golden age of Hindi cinema. Shantanu Moitra's songs consciously evoke the music of that era.
