J teaches salsa in Las Vegas and earns extra money by marrying immigrant women so they can get residency papers. He catches the eye of Gina, daughter of a powerful casino owner, and is on his way to a rich life when he meets Natasha, a Mexican woman who has done the same thing for money and who is about to marry Gina's violent brother Tony. Though they barely share a language, J and Natasha fall in love, and their escape across the American south-west towards the Mexican border turns into a desperate chase. Kites was an ambitious attempt at a crossover romance, with Mexican star Barbara Mori and dialogue in English, Spanish and Hindi; a shorter international version, Kites: The Remix, was cut by Hollywood director Brett Ratner.
