Rana grows up in the kingdom of Kottaipattinam carrying the memory of his father Kochadaiiyaan, a beloved and brilliant commander. As a young man he returns from exile to the rival kingdom of Kalingapuri, wins the trust of its king by building an army of slaves into a fighting force, and falls for Princess Vadhana, all while pursuing a plan of his own that ties back to his father's fate. The film was made entirely with motion-capture animation, with Rajinikanth, Deepika Padukone and the rest of the cast performing in capture suits, the first Indian feature to use the technique throughout. It was directed by Rajinikanth's daughter Soundarya, written by K. S. Ravikumar and scored by A. R. Rahman, and it is one of the rare Rajinikanth films in a double role as father and son.
