Raja is a cheerful milkman who keeps cattle on the edge of town, and his closest friend since childhood is the son of a wealthy family. Their bond seems unbreakable until the friend's father and his cronies poison it, and Raja loses his home and livelihood through his friend's betrayal. Wounded, he swears to build an empire bigger than theirs, and the story follows his climb and the bitter rivalry that grows between the two men. Kondapalli Raja is the Telugu remake of Rajinikanth's Tamil blockbuster Annaamalai (1992), which was itself inspired by the Hindi film Khudgarz. Venkatesh plays the lead with Nagma as the heroine and Suman as the friend turned rival, and the film was a hit in its own right, with music by M. M. Keeravani.
