Ekambaram is a simple, honest old man from a small town who works for a local timber merchant with a dangerous side business. One day his boss sends him to Chennai with a bag to deliver, the kind of plain bag printed with a monkey that anyone might carry. In Chennai his son Kathir drives a cab and is trying to settle down with the woman he loves. When the bag is snatched by a petty thief and begins passing from hand to hand, father, son and a set of dangerous men are pulled into a tense chain of events. Kurangu Bommai was the debut of Nithilan Saminathan, who later directed Maharaja (2024), and it shows the same flair for interlocking timelines. Veteran director Bharathiraja gives one of his finest acting performances as the father, and critics praised the film as one of the best Tamil thrillers of 2017.
