La Nueva Radio YA is a Managua news and sport station that first went on air on 22 December 1999 with a second-hand ELKOR transmitter, hand-made aerials and programmes played in off cassette. It broadcasts today from the Radio Sandino building in the capital on 600 kHz AM and 99.1 FM, and describes itself in its own words as a medium of Sandinista principles, popular vocation and commercial thinking. The day is built around the Noticiero YA bulletins, with a constant churn of breaking national news, crime and court reporting, and international wire stories in between. Sport is the other half of its character, carried by its own commentators and a Deportes YA podcast. Its stated ambition is straightforward enough: to be the number one station in Nicaragua on a varied, fast-moving diet of news, entertainment and sport.
