Lokpal is a Malayalam vigilante thriller from director Joshiy, made at a time when the fight against corruption and the demand for an anti-corruption ombudsman were dominating national headlines. Mohanlal plays a shadowy figure who uses many disguises to expose and punish corrupt people in public life, becoming a hero to ordinary citizens and a headache for the police and the powerful. Kavya Madhavan and Meera Nandan play the women drawn into his story. The film reunited Mohanlal and Joshiy, one of Malayalam cinema's most prolific star-director pairings, with a script by thriller writer S. N. Swamy, and its appeal lies mainly in Mohanlal's changes of look and the topical anti-corruption theme.
