Jai and Meera meet in London, fall for each other and, two years later, decide on a modern, no-hard-feelings break-up when her work takes her to India and he chases a job in San Francisco. They even throw a party to mark it. Hearing Jai's breezy account, Veer Singh, the elderly owner of a restaurant he frequents, starts telling his own story of falling for a girl named Harleen in 1960s India and the lengths he went to for her. The two romances, one old-fashioned and one determinedly casual, play off each other as Jai begins to suspect he has made a mistake. Love Aaj Kal was the first production of Saif Ali Khan's Illuminati Films, with Saif playing both Jai and the young Veer and Rishi Kapoor as the older Veer. Pritam's songs, including "Chor Bazaari", "Twist" and "Aahun Aahun", were huge hits.
