Maari is the self-styled boss of his Chennai locality: he collects protection money, loves his racing pigeons more than anything and struts through the streets in loud shirts and sunglasses. His comfortable reign is shaken when a new sub-inspector arrives with plans of his own and a young woman opens a boutique in the area, and Maari soon finds that the people he trusts may not be on his side. Maari is a stylish, comic gangster film from Balaji Mohan that turned Dhanush's swagger into a cult character, complete with catchphrases fans repeated for years. Playback singer Vijay Yesudas made his acting debut as the cop, Anirudh's songs were hits, and a sequel, Maari 2, followed in 2018.
