Vimalan and Akhilan are conjoined twins, joined at the chest but completely different in character: one is sharp and serious, the other a carefree charmer. Their father Ramachandran, a scientist, has built a hugely successful company around a children's health drink. When the company comes under suspicion and a translator, Anjali, joins the family business, the twins begin to stumble on clues that the drink's success is built on a dangerous lie, and that people who ask questions are being silenced. Maattrraan is a big-budget thriller from K. V. Anand, a former cinematographer who wrote it with the writer duo Subha. Suriya's double role as conjoined twins required elaborate visual effects and body doubling and is the film's main draw; the chase across Eastern Europe and Harris Jayaraj's songs add to the scale.
