An elderly Englishwoman arrives in present-day Chennai looking for a bridge and a man she last saw more than sixty years ago. Her story takes us back to Madras in 1947, where Amy, the daughter of a British official, meets Parithi, a dhobi and wrestler from the washermen's settlement. Their love has to survive language, class, colonial power and the countdown to Independence, when the British are preparing to leave. Madrasapattinam was praised for recreating old Madras, with its trams, colonial buildings and riverbanks, on carefully designed sets, and for G. V. Prakash Kumar's songs, especially "Pookal Pookum". It marked the screen debut of British model Amy Jackson, who went on to work across Tamil, Telugu and Hindi cinema.
