Madura Veeran is set in the countryside around Madurai and built around jallikattu, the traditional bull-taming sport. The young hero returns to his village to find that the village festival his late father championed has been stopped, and that local rivalries and caste divisions were behind it. He sets out to bring the sport back and unite the villagers, which makes him powerful enemies. The film was made in the wake of the 2017 protests across Tamil Nadu over the ban on jallikattu, and leans into that mood. It starred Shanmuga Pandian, son of actor-politician Vijayakanth, and was directed by cinematographer P. G. Muthiah.
