Every twelve years, the Zamorin of Calicut presided over the Mamankam festival on the banks of the Bharathapuzha at Thirunavaya, an honour that once belonged to the rulers of Valluvanad. In revenge, Valluvanad sent chaavers, suicide warriors sworn to fight their way to the Zamorin. Mamangam follows one family of these warriors across generations: a seasoned fighter haunted by an earlier festival, a young man trained for the attack and a boy, Chanthunni, who becomes one of the most celebrated figures of the legend. The film builds toward the festival through kalaripayattu training, intrigue and the human cost of the feud. M. Padmakumar's period epic, led by Mammootty with Unni Mukundan and child actor Achuthan, was one of the most expensive Malayalam films of its time and was released in Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu and Hindi.
