Ambikapathi, a young boy who has run away from a harsh life in his village, arrives at Marina Beach in Chennai and finds work selling water among the many children who scrape a living there by hawking snacks, singing and running errands. The film follows his friendships with the other children and the colourful beach regulars, including a young couple whose bickering romance plays out against the sea, while Ambikapathi clings to his wish to study. Written and directed by Pandiraj, who had won a National Award for his debut Pasanga, Marina was shot largely on the real beach. It is remembered as the film in which Sivakarthikeyan, then a television host, made his debut as a leading actor, alongside Oviya.
