Maya Bazar (1984)

Maya Bazar retells the popular legend, not found in the original Mahabharata but much loved in Indian folk tradition, of Abhimanyu and Vatsala. The young Abhimanyu, son of Arjuna, is betrothed to Vatsala, daughter of Balarama, but after the Pandavas lose their kingdom the match is called off and she is promised elsewhere. The giant Ghatotkacha, son of Bhima, takes up his cousin's cause, conjuring a magical illusory marketplace, the 'maya bazaar', and using his powers of shape-shifting to set things right. Babubhai Mistry, the master of trick photography in Hindi mythologicals, directs, and wrestler-actor Dara Singh, famous for his Hanuman, plays Ghatotkacha. The same story was famously filmed in Telugu and Tamil in 1957.
