Born so unattractive that his own family turns away from him, the hero is raised by a kindly musician and grows up with a rare gift for classical singing, though the world still judges him by his face. His voice wins hearts that his looks never could, and his feelings for a young woman bring him both hope and heartbreak. Ashok Kumar gives one of his most unusual performances under heavy make-up, with Asha Parekh and Pradeep Kumar. The film is treasured above all for S. D. Burman's music, including Manna Dey's "Poochho Na Kaise Maine Rain Bitaayi", one of the most celebrated classical songs in Hindi cinema, and Mohammed Rafi's "Naache Man Mora Magan".
