Ashok Kumar plays a man whose plain, dark appearance has made him an outsider from birth, rejected because of how he looks while carrying a gift for music that moves everyone who hears him. His life becomes entangled with the young woman played by Asha Parekh and the man played by Pradeep Kumar, in a drama about the gap between outer appearance and inner worth. The film is especially loved for S. D. Burman's classical-based music, with lyrics by Shailendra: Manna Dey's "Poochho Na Kaise Maine Rain Bitaai", built on raga Ahir Bhairav, is considered one of the finest classical songs in Hindi cinema, and Rafi's "Nache Mora Manwa Magan" is also a favourite.
