Rajesh, a carefree engineer in Chennai, is struck by a young woman he sees one rainy day and cannot get her out of his head. When he finally finds her again, he learns that Reena is engaged to Rajeev, an NRI she has never actually met, and that Rajeev is the same man Rajesh fought bitterly with throughout college. On an impulse Rajesh passes himself off as Rajeev, wins her heart, and then has to live with the lie as the real fiance heads home. Minnale ("lightning") was the debut of both director Gautham Vasudev Menon and composer Harris Jayaraj, whose songs, led by Vaseegara, became huge hits. Menon remade it in Hindi the same year as Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein, with Madhavan again in the lead, and that version later became a cult favourite.
