Ganesha, a police officer, is sent undercover into the underworld of Ronapura, a remote coastal region controlled by Bhairathi Ranagal, a gangster so feared that people speak of him like a ghost. Ganesha works his way up the gang, waiting for his chance to bring Ranagal down. But the closer he gets, the more complicated the picture becomes: Ranagal's rule is brutal, yet the people around him seem to see him differently from the state. Shiva Rajkumar's brooding Bhairathi Ranagal, who does not even appear for a long stretch, became one of his most iconic roles, and Ravi Basrur's thunderous score adds to the myth. The film was remade in Tamil as Pathu Thala (2023), and a prequel, Bhairathi Ranagal, followed in 2024.
