Avinash is a stunt rider whose accident has left him with patchy hearing and an empty wallet. A small-time gang recruits him for what is meant to be a simple job: kidnapping a wealthy man's son for ransom. The plan goes wrong at once, and the boy they end up holding is connected to a bar dancer, played by Manisha Koirala, and to a policeman with secrets of his own. What follows is a comedy of errors in which everyone misunderstands everyone. Mumbai Express was made simultaneously in Hindi and Tamil, written by and starring Kamal Haasan, and reunited him with Singeetam Srinivasa Rao, his director on Pushpak and Apoorva Sagodharargal. It was among the first Indian feature films shot entirely on digital video, and has music by Ilaiyaraaja.
