Muthu is the devoted servant and carriage driver of Rajasekhar, a wealthy, kind zamindar. When the master falls for a travelling stage actress, Ranganayaki, it is Muthu she ends up loving, and scheming relatives exploit the misunderstanding to turn the two men against each other. Meanwhile an old secret about the estate's rightful heir waits to come out. Muthu is the Tamil remake of the Malayalam hit Thenmavin Kombathu (1994) and was one of Rajinikanth's biggest hits, with A. R. Rahman's songs such as "Thillana Thillana" and "Oruvan Oruvan Mudhalali" hugely popular. Dubbed and released in Japan as Muthu: The Dancing Maharaja, it became a surprise sensation there and made Rajinikanth a star in Japan.
