In the village of Natyam, classical dance is a way of life, and the elders guard an old dance-drama that no one has ever been able to stage in full. A gifted young Kuchipudi dancer, is determined to perform it, but her ambition puts her at odds with tradition, her guru and a young man who prefers modern dance. Natyam is a film built around dance rather than one that merely includes it: its lead actress and producer Sandhya Raju is a trained Kuchipudi dancer, and the long dance sequences are its heart. The film won National Film Awards for its choreography and its make-up, a rare honour for a debut feature.
