Nausherwan, the Sassanid king of Persia remembered in legend as "the Just", rules by a strict code of fairness for all his subjects. That code is put to the test when his son, played by Raaj Kumar, falls in love across the lines of faith and loyalty, and the emperor must decide whether the law he has enforced on everyone else will also bind his own family. Sohrab Modi, the master of the Hindi historical film after Pukar and Sikandar, produced, directed and played the title role with his famous booming delivery. The film has lavish sets and costumes and a celebrated score by C. Ramchandra, whose songs, including "Taaron ki zubaan par hai mohabbat ki kahani" and "Bhool jaaye saare gham", are still remembered.
