Shivaji Rao is an ambitious cameraman at a news channel in Mumbai. After riots break out in the city, he lands a live interview with chief minister Balraj Chauhan and confronts him so sharply that the politician, mocking him, offers to let Shivaji be chief minister for one day. Shivaji accepts, and in twenty-four hours of surprise inspections, suspensions and decisions he does what years of governments have not, making a powerful enemy and becoming a hero to ordinary people. Nayak is Shankar's Hindi remake of his own Tamil hit Mudhalvan (1999), with A. R. Rahman's music, including "Chalo Chalein Mitwa" and "Saiyan", carried over and reworked. Anil Kapoor's energetic lead and Amrish Puri's wily politician are its highlights; the film found a much bigger audience on television than in cinemas.
