Years after the events of the story, a woman in a coastal village is questioned when human remains are discovered buried in her home. Through her memories the film goes back to Arulappasamy, a young man from a Christian fishing family who had become a hopeless alcoholic and an embarrassment to his parents. He falls in love with Esther, a gentle orphan raised in a church convent, and decides that to marry her he must quit drinking and become a fisherman, a trade that the community does not easily let an outsider into. Seenu Ramasamy, director of Thenmerku Paruvakaatru, paints the life of the fishing community with great tenderness, from Saranya Ponvannan's devoted mother to Samuthirakani's quiet fisherman. Nandita Das appears as the older Esther. N. R. Raghunanthan's songs and the coastal photography were widely admired.
