Description

In 1941 Subhas Chandra Bose, the former Congress president who has broken with Gandhi's non-violent approach, slips out of house arrest in Calcutta in disguise. The film follows his perilous journey across Afghanistan to Europe, his attempts to win support for Indian independence in wartime Germany, his long submarine voyage to Asia, and his leadership of the Indian National Army alongside the Japanese, as he fights for an India free of British rule. Shyam Benegal, one of the great names of Indian parallel cinema, made this as a large-scale historical biopic, and Sachin Khedekar's restrained performance as Netaji was widely praised. A. R. Rahman composed the music, and the film won National Film Awards, including the Nargis Dutt Award for the best feature film on national integration.
