Nishabd (2007)

Vijay, a photographer in his sixties, lives a calm, orderly life with his wife Amrita on a tea estate in the hills of Kerala. When his daughter brings home her free-spirited friend Jiah for the holidays, the young woman's restlessness and attention unsettle him, and the two slip into an intimacy that is never named but is soon impossible to hide. The film is less about the affair itself than about the silence and embarrassment around it and the hurt it causes the people at home. Shot in Munnar with long, quiet takes, Nishabd was one of Ram Gopal Varma's most talked-about films and the debut of Jiah Khan. Amitabh Bachchan, playing against type in a role many found uncomfortable, gives a restrained performance, and Revathi is affecting as the wife who senses everything.
