In early twentieth-century Bengal, Ramesh is in love with Hemnalini, but his father forces him into an arranged marriage in a village. On the way home, the wedding party's boats are wrecked in a storm, and Ramesh wakes on a sandbank next to a young bride he takes to be his wife. Only later does he discover that Kamala was married to another man that same night, and he has to decide how to protect her, how to tell the truth, and what to do about the woman he really loves. Based on Rabindranath Tagore's novel Nouka Dubi, the film was made in Bengali by Rituparno Ghosh and released in Hindi as Kashmakash, with songs rewritten by Gulzar. Its lush period recreation and restrained performances make it one of the finest Tagore adaptations of recent years.
