In the old folklore of Palakkad, Odiyans were men who could take on animal shapes at night, hired to frighten or kill. Manikyan, the last of them, left his village of Thenkurissi long ago under a cloud, after deaths he was blamed for and a love he could never claim. When he comes back, now aged, the film moves between present and past to uncover what really happened, and his return threatens Ravunni, a man who has hated him for years. Mohanlal plays Manikyan across decades and reportedly lost a great deal of weight to play the younger version. Odiyan was one of the most heavily promoted Malayalam films of its time and opened with very large collections, though reviews were mixed; it marked Mohanlal's reunion with Manju Warrier.
