Major Chandrakant, a blind and fiercely principled retired soldier, lives with his younger son and keeps his door open to anyone in need. One night a desperate young man, Rajni, comes to him, having killed the man who ruined his sister, and the major hides him. Meanwhile the major's elder son, a police inspector, is tasked with catching the killer, and the investigation points uncomfortably close to home. Oonche Log, 'High-born People', questions the ideas of honour and respectability held by the well-off. It was based on the play Major Chandrakanth by K. Balachander, which had also been filmed in Tamil, and the strong cast of Ashok Kumar, Raaj Kumar and the young Feroz Khan give it real weight. Chitragupta's songs include 'Jaag Dil-e-Deewana'.
