Patanga (1949)

Patanga is a 1949 romantic comedy-drama directed by H. S. Rawail, with Nigar Sultana and Shyam in the leads and the popular comic duo Yakub and Gope providing much of the fun. The film is best remembered today for C. Ramchandra's music, in particular Mere Piya Gaye Rangoon, the playful duet sung by Shamshad Begum and C. Ramchandra himself, in which a wife and her husband in far-off Rangoon trade lines over the telephone; it became one of the biggest song hits of its time and is still widely played. Rawail later went on to direct the hits Mere Mehboob and Sunghursh.
