Two groups of teenagers in Thiruvananthapuram, students of a government school and of an expensive private school, are locked in a rivalry that keeps spilling into brawls on the streets. Into their world comes John Abraham Palakkal, a charismatic and unconventional figure played by Mammootty in an extended special role, who sees in the boys something more than troublemakers. The film follows the young people as the feud escalates and asks what kind of education actually prepares a teenager for life. Pathinettam Padi ("eighteenth step") was the directorial debut of actor Shanker Ramakrishnan and introduced a large cast of newcomers, including Akshay Radhakrishnan, with Ahaana Krishna in a key role. Prithviraj Sukumaran, Arya and Unni Mukundan also appear, which made the film a talking point on release.
