Tamizh is a fearless young rowdy who takes contracts for a Chennai gang and quickly becomes the most dangerous man in their ranks. He falls for Shruti, a fitness instructor pestered by a corrupt police inspector, and the more she learns about his work, the more she struggles with her feelings. Meanwhile the police are hunting the gang's elusive boss, Ali Bhai, and Tamizh's double game draws all of them toward a showdown. Pokkiri is the Tamil remake of Puri Jagannadh's Telugu blockbuster Pokiri, and it was Prabhu Deva's first Tamil film as a director. It became one of the biggest hits of Vijay's career, with Vadivelu's comedy track and Mani Sharma's songs widely loved, and Prabhu Deva later remade the story in Hindi as Wanted.
