Prabhu is a directionless young man in north Chennai, forever at odds with his father, until a loan lets him buy a Pulsar motorcycle that suddenly gives his life confidence, a job and a girlfriend. When the bike is stolen, he goes looking for it himself and stumbles into the territory of a violent gang, where an unstable gangster's ambitions and his elder brother's power struggles turn Prabhu's personal search into a fight for survival. Polladhavan was the debut of director Vetrimaaran, who went on to make Aadukalam, Visaranai and Asuran, and it remains one of Dhanush's defining films. The story was loosely inspired by Bicycle Thieves, and Daniel Balaji's stuttering, menacing Ravi became one of the most memorable Tamil villains of the decade.
