Polynésie la 1ère is the public broadcaster of French Polynesia, part of the Outre-mer la 1ère family, and its radio service has been on air from Tahiti since 1949. It works out of the Pamatai centre above Papeete and reaches across a territory of well over a hundred scattered islands. The day is built around bilingual journalism, with the main bulletins and the shorter Ve'a updates alternating between French and Tahitian, plus a morning slot that hands ten minutes to whoever has something to say that week. Between the news it is unapologetically local music radio: Polynesian songs, artist interviews and archive selections of pa'umotu playing and older voices. Weekends slow right down, with music programmes in the small hours and afternoon repeats for anyone who missed them.
