Major Pratap Chauhan is a strict, almost brutal trainer of commandos. One of his recruits, the cheerful Peter D'Souza, leaves the army and returns to his Mumbai neighbourhood, where he stands up to the extortionists bleeding local shopkeepers. When Chauhan comes to the city to see Peter and meets his fiancée Shirley, he discovers how the people there live in fear, and he decides to act. Prahaar was Nana Patekar's only film as director, and he insisted on realism: the commando-training scenes were made with the Indian Army's help, and Madhuri Dixit appeared without make-up in a deglamorised role far from her star image. It is an angry, unusual film about citizens who do nothing while evil thrives.
