In the old Malay kingdom of Langkasuka, on the southern edge of present-day Thailand, the reigning queen and her sisters face a threat from a pirate prince and his alliance with foreign powers who want the realm and its mighty cannons. At the heart of the struggle is a fisherman's son who learns an ancient magic that commands the sea, and the black sorcerer who wants it for himself. Queens of Langkasuka is a lavish Thai fantasy epic directed by Nonzee Nimibutr, known for the ghost film Nang Nak. Its Thai title translates as Giant Cannons, Queens of the Seas, and its battles combine sea monsters, flying warriors and enormous black-powder guns. It was one of the more expensive Thai productions of its time, and its colourful costumes and effects make it a sea-going fantasy spectacle.
