Mala is a principled young schoolteacher from a modest family. When Raj, the spoilt son of a wealthy household, assaults her, the court that hears the case decides that he must marry her. Married into the very family that protects him, Mala refuses to be silenced, and the film follows her struggle for respect in a house that sees her as an intruder, and Raj's slow reckoning with what he has done. Raja Ki Aayegi Baraat was the Hindi debut of Rani Mukerji, who went on to become one of the leading stars of Hindi cinema; she had earlier appeared in a Bengali film directed by her father. It was also the debut of Shadaab Khan, son of Sholay villain Amjad Khan. The film is remembered for its strong-willed heroine and its family melodrama.
