Rajjo (2013)

Rajjo is a gifted dancer and singer who performs in a kotha in the old quarters of Mumbai. A younger college student falls for her and wants to marry her, a choice that scandalises his family. At the same time a ruthless politician and builder has plans to clear the neighbourhood and its women, and Rajjo becomes the face of their resistance. Rajjo is the directorial debut of Marathi novelist Vishwas Patil, and Kangana Ranaut leads it with dance numbers and dramatic scenes, opposite Paras Arora. The film draws on the tradition of courtesan dramas of earlier Hindi cinema.
