After returning to Ayodhya, Rama rules over a kingdom held up as the model of justice. Then gossip spreads among his subjects about Sita's stay in Lanka, and a king who has promised to place his people first finds that duty asks a terrible price of him. Sita, pregnant, is sent to the forest, where she finds shelter in the hermitage of the sage Valmiki and raises her twin sons Lava and Kusha. Vijay Bhatt's devotional epic, made for his Prakash Pictures, became one of the biggest hits of its decade. Prem Adib and Shobhana Samarth were so identified with Rama and Sita that devotees hung calendar pictures of them in their homes. The film is also famous as the only feature film Mahatma Gandhi is reported to have watched, and its devotional songs by Shankar Rao Vyas were sung across the country for years.
