Gauri and Govind have been inseparable since childhood in their village, and as they grow up their friendship turns into love. Their hopes run into the hard wall of family honour and arranged marriage, and the film follows the heartbreak that comes when the people they love decide their futures for them. Rattan is remembered above all for its songs. Naushad's score, with lyrics by D. N. Madhok, produced a string of hits such as "Ankhiyan Milake Jiya Bharmake" and "Jab Tum Hi Chale Pardes", sung largely by Zohrabai Ambalewali, and it was one of the biggest box-office successes of the 1940s. The film's music established Naushad as one of the leading composers of Hindi cinema, a position he held for decades.
