Red (2002)

Red is a strongman in the old quarter of Madurai who settles disputes, protects the weak and terrifies the local rowdies. He dresses only in red, keeps his head shaved and speaks little, and the people of his neighbourhood treat him with a mixture of love and fear. When a young woman comes into his life and a ruthless rival begins to move against him, the reasons behind his violent single-mindedness are slowly revealed. The film was a deliberate move by Ajith Kumar towards mass action roles after a run of romantic films, and his tonsured look and red costume became a talking point. It was the first film of director Singampuli, who later became better known as a comedy actor. Deva's soundtrack includes several songs popular with Ajith's fans.
