On the salt flats of the Rann of Kutch, along the India-Pakistan border, a young man known only as Refugee makes a living guiding people across illegally, many of them families left stateless by the divisions of the subcontinent. On one crossing he meets Naaz, and the two fall deeply in love, but her family's place on the other side of the border, and the soldiers and border guards who patrol it, threaten everything they hope for. Refugee was the debut film of both Abhishek Bachchan and Kareena Kapoor, who won the Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut. J. P. Dutta shot it on location in the Rann and in the deserts of Kutch, and the film is visually striking. Javed Akhtar won the National Award for Best Lyrics for Panchhi Nadiya Pawan Ke Jhonke.
