Hashmatullah is a gifted, God-fearing motor mechanic in Allahabad who is entrusted with restoring a vintage Ford V8 engine. It belongs to the vehicle that carried an urn of Mahatma Gandhi's ashes, which is now to be immersed at the Sangam, the meeting point of the Ganga and Yamuna, decades after his death. At the same time a bomb blast in the city brings suspicion down on Muslims, and community leaders call for a protest shutdown that would keep Hashmatullah from his work. He must choose between the loyalty demanded by his neighbourhood and a task he believes is a sacred duty. Road to Sangam is a quiet, humane drama inspired by the real immersion of Gandhi's remaining ashes in 2008, with one of Paresh Rawal's finest serious performances. It travelled to several international film festivals.
