Roja is a cheerful village girl who marries Rishi Kumar, a cryptologist from the city, after a mix-up over a proposal meant for her sister. Just as the newlyweds begin to love each other, Rishi is posted to Kashmir on a government assignment, and there he is abducted by militants who want their leader released in exchange. Speaking neither Hindi nor the local language, Roja knocks on every door of officialdom to bring him home, while Rishi faces his captors, led by Pankaj Kapur's Liaqat. Roja was A. R. Rahman's first film score, and songs such as "Chinna Chinna Aasai" and "Kadhal Rojave" made him a star overnight. It won National Awards including Best Film on National Integration, Best Music Direction and Best Lyrics, and its dubbed version was a nationwide hit.
