Rudra is an inspector in Chennai who wages a stubborn campaign against the drug peddlers getting schoolchildren hooked. During one raid a young man is injured and later dies, and the incident is turned into a political storm: Rudra is accused of brutality, suspended and hounded in court and in the media. Behind the campaign stands a smooth politician with his own interests in the trade, and Rudra must prove what really happened. Director Gautham Vasudev Menon, best known behind the camera, plays the villain. Like Mohan G's previous film Draupathi, Rudra Thandavam stirred debate in Tamil Nadu for its handling of caste and religious conversion.
