Safed (2023)

Safed ("white", the colour of widowhood) follows a young widow condemned to the harsh, isolated life imposed on widows in Varanasi, and a transgender person who has also been pushed to the edges of society. Their friendship grows into something deeper, and they dare to imagine a life beyond what the world allows them. The film is a social drama about two kinds of exclusion, set against the ghats of the holy city. It marked the directorial debut of producer Sandeep Singh, and Abhay Verma's performance as the transgender character drew attention.
