Safed Jhooth (1977)

Safed Jhooth ("white lie") is a Hindi comedy from Basu Chatterjee, the director of gentle middle-class films such as Chhoti Si Baat and Rajnigandha. Vinod Mehra and Mithu Mukherjee play the young couple at its centre and Ashok Kumar a senior figure whose presence complicates their plans, as one small deception leads to another and the effort to keep up appearances becomes increasingly absurd. Like the director's other films, it finds its comedy in ordinary people and everyday situations rather than slapstick.
